A Divat a párizsi világtárlaton 1889/Fashion at the Parisian world exposition 1889

I.

Szeretetreméltó olvasónőink bizonyára szívesen veszik egy a divat terén elsőrendű szakértő személyes feljegyzéseit a párizsi világtárlat divatjáról. Pertik Béla, a Monaszterly és Kuzmik Utódai cég érdemdús társfőnöke, külön a Magyar Bazár részére készítette azokat, s mi örömmel közöljük e kompetens toll érdekes jegyzeteit:

A naponként százával érkező vasúti vonatok - írja Pertik - egész népvándorlást szállítanak ide és mindenkinek csak egy a véleménye. Hasonlót még nem látott a világ. Minden kereskedő, minden iparos ki a kiállítást látogatja szakmájában buzdítást talál, sőt nekünk, kik Párizzsal folytonos összeköttetésben állunk nagy elégtételt szolgáltat, amennyiben újabbat, mint mi nyújtunk az "idény" kezdetével tavaszi divatújdonságok gyanánt, itt sem találunk.

Mindjárt belépéskor, különben előbb az összhatásnak kell meghódolnunk, mielőtt saját szakmánknak szentelnénk magunkat. S ez a hatás valóban megkapó!

Ha a jénai kapun lépünk be a kiállításba és az Eiffel-torony felé megyünk, előttünk van a monumentális kút, melyet Berger, a kiállítás igazgatója emeltetett, honnan sugár formában indulnak ki a kiállítás terjedelmes kerti részei. A kiállítás fő épületei ezen pont köré vannak csoportosítva. Szemközt velünk van Párizs városának pavilonja, impozáns, színes téglákkal fedezett kupolájával. Jobbra és balra vannak a "Palais de Beaux Arts" és az "Arts Liberaux Palais"-ai, szintén kupolás építmények. Ha tovább megyünk a gépcsarnokhoz érünk, az Eiffel-torony után a kiállítás legnyagyobb épülete. A Mars mező ezen részén átfutó sétaút egész hosszában terül el az úgynevezett "Galérie des Pays do Soleil". Franciaország összes tengerentúli tartományai egyesültek itt egy mesés új világgá. Itt a kairói utca is, hol 200 fehér szamár áll a közönség rendelkezésére. A végén van a tarka téglákkal és mozaikkal kirakott tornyocskákkal és erkélyekkel túlhalmozott Palais des Colonies, széles verandával környezve, oly gazdag építkezés és oly fantasztikus színezéssel, hogy azt leírni lehetetlen. Balra innen vannak az algíri és tuniszi épületek, egy tökéletesen berendezett arabs falu közepén. Jobbra fekszenek Tonking, Madagaszkár, Aunam, Guyanna, Guadalupe és Gabon pavilonjai és a bokrok zöldjében félig elrejtőzve tahiti, kanaki, szenegáli kunyhók, mind eredeti lakóikkal, kik magukkal hozták háziállítaikat, játékaikat, szerszámjaikat és bútorjaikat, hogy a rokkantak tornyának árnyékában folytassák mindennapi teendőiket. Az Eiffel-torony és a folyó közt terül el a "Historie de l'Habitation" gyűjteménye, mely épp oly tanulságos, mint élvezetes látvány.

A kiállítás velejét azonban szakemberek előtt természetesen az ipar termékei képezik. Nem a szenzácionális, érdekfeszítő részletek után, amilyen az Eiffel-torony és a gépcsarnok kell megítélni egy kiállítást, mert ezek éveken át készültek előre; hanem az ipar ezerféle termékei után, melyek egy nemzet mindennapi munkájának természetes gyümölcsiet mutatják be. Magától értetődik, hogy e tárlaton a szövő és készruha ipar nagyszerűen vannak képviselve, hisz Párizs az angol konkurencia dacára a divatra még mindig határozottan a legtöbb befolyással bír. Párizs ruhái és felöltői itt is elragadnak bennünket, bár a legelőkelőbb párizsi cégek, melyeknek nevei a tőlük hozott szép mintáink által budapesti vevőink előtt is ismeretesek, ez egyszer távollétük által tündökölnek. A divat termékei a "Palais des Industries diverses"-ben vannak elhelyezve, melynek legnagyobb részét a francia ipar foglalja el. Kész ruha igen sok van, de legnagyobb részük inkább gazdag kiállításuk és szövetjeik értékessége által tűnik ki s kevés újat nyújtanak.

Legkitűnőbb a "Bon Marché" és a "Grand Magasins du Louvre" kiállítása. Ez utóbbi egy koronázási köpenyt állított ki, mely valóban remekmű. A legnehezebb fehér failleből készült, színes selyemmel és arannyal, en plein virágbokrétákkal hímezve és fodorított fehér strucctollakkal környezve, feltűzése a vállakra két hatalmas arany csat által eszközöltetik. A ruha, mely e köpeny alatt viseltetik, egészen sima princess szabású, gazdagon arannyal hímezett fehér dentelle de Venisel behúzva, alsó szélén szintén fodorított fehér strucctoll. Igen eredeti és szép egy estélyiruha újzöld színben, melyet "Vert d'Espérance"-nak hívnak; e ruha szintén Princess szabású és egészen laposan van elrendezve, dereka valamint előrésze kék búzavirágokkal gazdagon hímezve. Az alj két oldalán nyílik hosszú, sárga krepp plissé betét fölött; hátulsó részére tojásdad szabású zöld bársonyuszály borul, mely szintén sárga krepp plissével van körülvéve. Igen érdekes ezen cégnek egy színházi köpenye is. Ez világoskék brokátból van, egész terjedelmében áthúzva keskeny arany Frou-Frou szalagokkal és arany pillangókkal hímezve. Erre két oldalt még két  nagy csokrot hímeztek, mit jóformán mellőzhettek volna, miután az egész köpeny úgyis már arannyal van borítva. De a kiállításnál főképp az idegenekre számítottak és a párisziak nézete szerint ezeknek nem lehet semmit sem túlhalmozni. Meglehet, hogy ez így van az ameriaki és orosz nőket illetőleg, de nálunk nem. Még egy második koronázási köpenyt is állított ki ezen ház, mi elég különös hatást tesz egy köztársaságban. E köpeny vörös bársonyból van, egész terjedelmében legyezőráncokba rakva és köröskörül 25 cm szélességben skunksal környezve. Igen ízléses egy báliruha vízszínű zöld kreppből és smaragdzöld brokátból. A krepp előrésze igen könnyedén van redőzve, két oldalán egy-egy szélesség a nehéz selyemből fehér és világoslila liliomokkal hímezve. Az ujjak 2 méter hosszúságban vannak szabva és "cascade" formában berakva, fellül a vállat szabadon hagyják, alul a csípőkig érnek és hátul az uszály közepe táján világoszöld strucctoll csokor segélyével vannak feltűzve. Onnan kezdve az uszály strucctollakkal van környezve, melyek különben elég nehézkes, hosszú uszálynak bizonyos könnyedtséget kölcsönöznek. Végre van itt még egy szép rózsaszínű ruha "Genre Rubens" ezüstszínű polonaisere drapírozva. A kivágott derék Rubensgallért mutat és brabanti csipkével van környezve.

A "Bon Marché" kiállítása egészen összhangzásban van a cég nevével, ami helyes is. Mert nyílván az "idegenek" is tudnak számítani, ami kitetszik onnan, hogy az olcsóbb kiállított toilettek 10-12-szeresen is el vannak már adva, míg a drágábbak még mindig várják az érdekes "vendue" táblácskát. A "Bon Marché" kiállításának legízlésteljesebb darabja egy ruha világos ezüstszínű sicilienneből, gazdagon acélfonállal hímezve, közben tündöklő acél pillangókkal. Különösen este villanyfénynél pompás e ruha. Igen szép egy utcai toilette sötétkék cheviotból "Genre Marin" fehér flanel blúzzal és kék jaquettel, minőt különben mi is már készítettünk Budapesten. A cég több igen ízléses hímzett cachemire ruhát is állított ki, melyeket a párizsi hölgyek igen kedvelnek és melyek az ősszel nagyban dívni fognak.

I.

Our lovely readers assuredly welcome the personal notes of a first class expert of fashion's realm, about the fashion at the Parisian world exposition. Béla Pertik, the meritorious co-chief of Monaszterly and Kuzmik Successors' house, had made those for Magyar Bazár and we gladly report this competent pen's juicy notes:

The daily by the hundred arriving railway trains - as Pertik writes - deliver here a whole migration and everyone has the same judgement. The world had never seen anything like this. Every trader, every craftsman who visit the exposition finds exhortation within his career, even to us, who are in constant connection with Paris serves with a great satisfaction, insofar as newer what we offer during the beginning of the "season" as springtime fashion novelties, can't find here either.

Instantly as entering, otherwise before we have to yield to the general effect before we would devote ourselves to our own craft. And this effect is indeed striking!

If we enter the exposition through the gate of Jena and head towards the Eiffel tower, in front of us is the monumental fountain, which was raised by Berger, the director of the exposition, from where in avenue form spring the expostition's voluminous garden parts. The exposition's main buildings are gathered around this point. In front of us are the pavilions of Paris city, with stately, colorful tegula covered dome. At right and left are the "Palais des Beaux Arts" and the "Arts Liberaux Palais", also dome structures. If we go further we get to the machinery hall, after the Eiffel tower the biggest building of the exposition. At this part of Mars field's passing promenade in full length lies the so called "Galérie des Pays du Soleil". Every oversea provinces of France here unites into a fabulous new world. Here is the Cairo street too, where 200 white donkeys are at public's service. At the end is the motley brick and mosaic built, towers and balcony overwhelmed Palais des Colonies surrounded with wide veranda, with such rich structure and such fantastic color, it's impossible to describe. From here to the left are the buildings of Algiers and Tunis, in the middle a perfectly furnished Arabian village. At the right lie the pavilions of Tonking, Madagascar, Aunam, Guyanna, Guadalupe and Gabon and within the greenery halfly hidden the huts of Tahiti, Kanaki, Senegal, all with the original residents who had brought along their domestic animals, toys, tools and furnitures, to carry on their everage daily routine at the shade of the tower of disableds. Between the Eiffel tower and the river the "Histoire de l'Habitation" collection lies, which is just as an edifying as an amusing view.

But the exposition's kernel for professionals naturally the industry products are. An exposition shouldn't be judged after sensational, exciting details, like Eiffel tower and machinery hall, because these were made years before; but after the thousands of industrial products, which display the natural fruits of a nation's everyday labour. It is a matter of course, that during this exposition the weaving and ready-made dressing industry are superbly represented, because Paris, despite of the English competition, still has the most influence on fashion. Parisian dresses and wraps here too rapture us, although the prior Parisian fashion houses, whichs' names by their neat models brought by us are known by our Budapest buyers too, this time are conspicuous by their absence. Fashion products are placed in "Palais des Industries diverses", which's bigger part is occupied by French industry. There are quite many ready-made dresses, but most of them rather mark out by their rich assemblage and costly fabrics and represent little novelty.

The most eminents are "Bon Marché" and "Grand Magasins du Louvre" displays. The latter displays a coronation mantle, which is a true masterpiece. Made from the heaviest white faille, embroidered with colorful silk and gold scattered with en plein flower bouquets and edged with curled white ostrich feathers, the closure on the shoulders are made by two big gold buckles. The robe, which is worn under this mantle, is wholly simple Princess tailored, covered by richly gold embroidered white dentelle de Venise, at the hem also curved white ostrich feathers. Very creative and neat an evening dress in new-green color, which is called "Vert d'Espérance"; this dress is also Princess tailored and arranged wholly flat, the bodice also the front richly embroidered with blue cornflowers. The skirt is cutaway at both sides above a long yellow crépe pleated insertion; onto the back an oval tailored green velvet train falls, which is also edged with yellow crépe pleats. Very arresting a theatre cape from this house too. This is from light blue brocade, in it's whole volume covered by narrow golden Frou-Frou ribbons and embroidered with golden butterflies. Onto this at both sides even two big bows were embroidered, which ought had been neglected, because the whole cape is covered by gold so far. By during the assemblage they were mainly counting on the foreigners and according to Parisian view for them nothing can be overwhelmed enough. Possibly, that this is true in regard of American and Russian women, but not for us. Even a second coronation mantle was displayed by this house, which is very odd in a republic. This mantle is from red velvet, in it's full volume setted into fan-pleats and all around in 25 cm width edged with skunks. A ball dress is very tasteful from water-green crépe and emerald-green brocade. The crépe front part is very easily draped, at the two sides one-one gore from the heavy silkembroidered with white and light violet lilies. The sleeves are tailored in 2 meter lengths and setted into "cascade" form, at the top the shoulder is left free, at the bottom reach down to the hips and at the back around the center of the train are pinned up by the help of light green ostrich feather bouquet. Starting from there athe train is edged with ostrich feathers, which to the anyways heavy train give certain lightness. Finally here we have another nice pink dress "Genre Rubens" draped on silver colored polonaise. The low bodice displays a Rubens collar and edged with Brabant lace.

The "Bon Marhé"s display is in harmony with the house's name, which is right. Because obviously even the "aliens" can count too, which shows by that the cheap assemblaged toilettes are sold 10-12 times too, but while the expensives are still waiting for the arresting "vendue" plate. "Bon Marché" display's most delicate piece is a dress from light silver colored sicilienne embroidered richly with steel thread, amongst shiny steel butterflies. Especially at night under electric light this dress is sumptuous. A street toilette is very nice  from dark blue cheviot with "Genre Marin" white flanel blouse and blue jacket, otherwise like such we had already made too in Budapest. The house had displayed several very tasteful embroidered cashmere dresses too, what the Parisian ladies like very much and which shall be very stylish during autumn fashion.

II.

A számtalan, többé-kevésbé kiváló cég között, melyeknek készítményei magukra vonják figyelmünket, felemlítjük még a következőket:

Lomot et Comp. ruha nefelejcsekkel telt virágkosárkákkal hímezve, alsó szélén gazdag tolldísz. Mdme Margain szalmavirágokkal hímzett ruha. Lebrun Vidal et Comp. igen értékes hímzett brokátruhával tűnt fel, melynek nehéz bársony uszályába arany kalászok vannak hímezve. Igen szépek még Pasquier et Comp. és a Pelletier cég kiállításai. Labroguére (Compagnie Russe) valamint Redfern and Sons Londonból a francia és angol osztályban remek szabású angol ruhák és esőköpenyek nagy választékával vonzzák a nézőket. A külföldiek osztályában Birnbaum and Sons Londonból különösen elegáns, vízhatlan esőköpenyeket állítottak ki hölgyek számára.

Nicholson and Co. Londonból jaquettek által tűnik ki, úgyszintén Redfern and Co. is, e világhírű cég, melynek készítményei páratlan jó ízlést és a leggondosabb munkát tüntetik fel. Szép, többek közt, egy valódi angol "Military jacket" (katona zeke) fekete fésűnyíratú (Kammgarn) szövetből, széles szőrszalaggal körülszegve és díszítve; szép egy világos drappszín, testhez álló esőköpeny is e cégtől, a derék széléig érő pelerine gallér és a rajta fekvő skótkockás selyem bélésű kámzsával. A szintén angol Debenham and Freebody gazdagon állítottak ki, azonban ezen különben oly derék cég semmi újat vagy meglepőt nem hozott.

Mindenkinek szembetűnik S. Revillon páriszi szőrmeárús cég dús, gazdag kiállítása. A pompás nyuszt prémek ily gazdag gyűjteménye talán sehol e világon sem létezik többé. Mint hallottuk Peter Robinson Londonból e prémekért máris 100 000 frankot ígért. Rouff & C. egyes szép jacketeket mutat be villanykék posztóból, fekete asztrakán prémmel és huszár módra zsinórozva. Hasonlóakat a "Louvre" és Bon Marché is állítottak ki, továbbá jacketokat vörös posztóból egészen beborítva fekete vagy arany zsinórozással, és jacketokat blúzszerű, skótkockás selyem jabottal. Mademoiselle Hertnick, Ernest Honnet és Nicolas Kriegk Párizsból jacketoket igen elegáns, finom posztóból, selyemmel bélelve, minden dísz nélkül. Laurent Edmond különféle szép matinéekat és alsószoknyákat, tricot derekakat. Le Roy (Párizsból) jacketjai hímzett Directoire hajtókákat és blúzbetéteket mutatnak fel és oldalt záródnak három nagy gombbal. Kiváló szép paszománymunkákat állítottak ki Francis Lampérierre és J. Roussel Successeurs, továbbá Ermaus Saunier, G. Pielard és Bertin Conrads, mind Párizsból. El nem múlaszthatjuk felemlíteni, hogy mindezek méregdrágák. Nagyszerűen vannak képviselve a tüll és csipke gyárosok: Calais, Puy, Candry Tarare és Lyonból. Lehetetlen ezek kiállításáról fogalmat nyújtani. A legszebb tüllöket télen szép vevőink nálunk is fogják találni, báliruhákra alkalmazva. Selyemszöveteket lyoni és sainte etiennei gyárosok úgy külön-külön, mint gyűjteményesen állítottak ki és ismét bebizonyították, hogy ezeknek gyártását páratlanul kezelik.

A francia szövés korrektsége, színpompája és leleményessége a mintázatra nézve egyszerűen utolérhetetlennek mondható. Épp oly utánozhatatlanok, nagyszerűek a franciák azon modorra nézve, mellyel szövetjeiket kiállítják. A nagy kioszk a főteremben, hol a lyoni selyemgyárosok gyűjteményes kiállítása van elhelyezve, pompásan van felszerelve. Egyik selyemgyáros mintáit arany rámákban, üveg alatt mutatja be, úgy, hogy az ember azt hinné, hogy képgyűjtemény van előtte. Egy másik gyártmányait legyező, nap vagy piramis alakban szövetből rendezik el. A lyoni gyárak leginkább brokátokkal és broché kelmékkel tündökölnek. A fő motívumot ezeknél első sorban nagy virágmintázatok, továbbá csillagok és nagy tollak (strucctoll utánzás) képezik. Igazán művészies kivitelű szöveteket láttunk nagy medalionokkal, festői képletekkel, pásztor jelentekkel vagy tájképpel beszőve. Valóban szép szövetek, de melyeknek alkalmazását nem is sejtem. Több sikerük van a bordürös és hímzett mintázattal beszövött selymeknek, melyket itt nagyszerű választékban találunk és melyek az őszi idényre is divatosak lesznek. Egzotikus ízlésük által feltűnőek még a china selymek, továbbá szembetűnő az orosz (moszkvai) selyemgyárosok haladása. A nagy francia divatszövet gyártelepek: Lille, Elbouef, Rheims, Roubaix és Sedan többynire egyetemesen állítottak ki.

Egészben véve a kiállítás szép látogatónői el fogják ismerni, hogy az újdonságok, melyeket kicsiben (azaz nem oly nagy választékban) nálunk is ne láthatták volna, nem igen vannak. A szövetek minőségét különben nem lehet leírni, a legszebb új szövetekből pedig az ősszel már ismét magunk, azaz Monaszterly és Kuzmik Utódai rendezünk kiállítást a Váci utcában; amelyre előre is figyelmeztetjük a Magyar Bazár szeretetreméltó olvasónőit.

Amongst the countless, more or less excellent houses, which's products had cought our attention, we still mention the followings:

Lomot et Comp. dress embroidered with baskets full of forget-me-nots, at the bottom edge rich feather adornment. Mdme Margain dress embroidered with straw flowers. Lebrun Vidal et Comp. marked out with a very valuable embroidered brocade dress, on which's heavy velvet train golden spicas are embroidered. Furthermore very beautiful are Pasquier et Comp. and the Pelletier houses' displays. Labroguére (Campagnie Russe) also Redfern and Sons from London at the French and English section gather the viewers with the big muster of masterfully tailored English dresses and raincapes. At foreigns' section Birnbaum and Sons  from London had displayed especially elegant waterproof raincapes for the ladies.

Nicholson and Co. from London marked out by jaquettes, also Redfern and Co. too, this worldwide famous house, which's products represent impair good taste and the most elaborating work. Among a lot neat is a "Military Jacket" from black quill-clipped (Kammgarn) fabric, edged and adorned with wide wollen ribbon; neat is a light drab colored, tight fitted raincape too from this house, with pelerine collar reaching to the waistline and above this tartan silk lined hood. The also English Debenham and Freebody had displayed richly, but this otherwise such proper house didn't bring nothing neither new nor striking.

S. Revillon Parisian fur house eye-catches everyone with his opulently rich display. The sumptuous marten furs' such rich collection perhaps never elsewhere on Earth shall exist anymore. As we had learned Peter Robinson from London for these furs right away had promised 100 000 frank. Rouff & C. displays some neat jackets from electric-blue cloth, with black astrachan fur and braided as hussar. Similars were displayed by "Louvre" and Bon Marché too, furthermore jackets from red cloth wholly covered by black or golden brtaids, and jackets with blouse-like, tartan silk jabots. Mademoiselle Hertnick, Ernest Honnet and Nicolas Kriegk from Paris jackets from very elegant, fine cloth lined with silk, wholly unadorned. Laurent Edmond various neat matinées and petticoats, tricot bodices. Le Roy's (from Paris) jackets model embroidered Directoire lapels and blouse-insertions, closed aside with three big buttons. Especially neat passemantery-works were displayed by Francis Lampérierre and J. Roussel Successeurs, furthermore Ermaus Saunier, G. Pielard and Bertin Conrads, all from Paris. We can't lack to mention, that all of these cost an arm and a leg. The tulle and lace manufacturers are represented magnificently: Calais, Puy, Candry Tarare and Lyon. It's impossible to describe these's displays. The most beautiful tulles our charming customers shall find at our house too assemblaged on ball dresses. Silk materials from manufacturers of Lyon and Sainte Etienne as separately, as in collection had represented and they had demonstrated again, that they handle these's production impairly.

The correctness, color opulency and cleverness of French weaving in regard of motifs, can be declared simply peerless. Just as inimitable, great the French are in regard of that method, how they display their fabrics. The big bandstand at the forum, where the silk manufacturers' of Lyon collectional display is placed, is furnished stunningly. One silk manufacturer's samples are displayed within windows in golden frame, that one would think a picture collection is at the sight. Another's products in fan, sun or pyramid shape arranged from fabric. The mills of Lyon mainly glory by brocades and brochée materials. The main motifs on these firstly are represented by big flower designs, furthermore stars and big feathers (ostrich feather imitation). We saw really artistically finished fabrics with big medalions, darned with picturesque ideals, pastoral scenes or landscapes. Neat fabrics indeed, but I can't imagine their usage. The bordured and embroidery motif darned silks are more successful, what we find here in great muster and which shall be stylish for autumn season too. Still by their exotic genre mark out the chinese silks too, furthermore eye-catching the progress of Russian (Moscow) silk manufacturers. The great French fashion fabric works: Lille, Elbouef, Rheims, Roubaix and Sedan had mostly displayed universally.

Altogether the charming visitors of the exposition shall admit, that such novelties, what at retail (that is not in such big muster) couldn't have seen at our house too, not many. Otherwise it's impossible to describe the fabrics' quality, and from the most beautiful new fabrics yet again us, namely Monaszterly and Kuzmik Successors shall arrange an exhibition at Váci street; of which we forewarn Magyar Bazár's lovely readers.
